Food Forests: Growing the Way Nature Does It
12:00 – 4:00pm
Who waters, weeds and feeds our forests? Can we design our gardens and farms to be as carefree as out wild forests? What can we learn from natural forests to create more sustainable farms, gardens and local communities and support our wildlife?
Suitable for backyards as well as small scale farms, food forests are manmade agricultural installations designed by mimicking natural forests. Food forestry aims towards the self reliance and resilience of natural forests. It supports pollinators and other wildlife while providing not only food, but other resources that support local community self reliance. Climate constraints of the high desert and climate change are key considerations in the course. It’s been done for 2000 years in Morocco, so surely it can be done here. Join us in creating a food forest for Albuquerque while designing one specifically for your own home or farm. (read more…)
