Golden Open Space, including the Los Duendes Trail

WHY IT'S OUTSTANDING:

The Golden Open Space is a 1,180-acre preserve consisting of a north mesa and a south mesa divided by a heavily eroded, multi-colored arroyo complex. Breathtaking views are available along the rim of the mesa overlooking the arroyo complex where colors include red, gray and yellow sandstone, limestone and mudstone. Keep your eyes open for the mysterious Los Duendes, trail-builidng creatures that local author Stephen Ausherman made famous in his book “60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Albuquerque”.

WHY IT'S OUTSTANDING:

The Placitas Open Space consists of 560 acres of rolling hills, arroyos and a portion of Las Huertas Creek. The creek is ephemeral and flows after heavy rains or a good snow melt. Vegetation in the area is comprised predominately of pinon-juniper woodland. Be on the lookout for wild horses that travel between the Open Space and surrounding BLM land.
